Many years ago my mother and I attended a wonderful 3 day weekend of all sorts of classes offered by the Arkansas Game & Fish. It was called Becoming an Arkansas Woman. Females only! We took classes in campfire cooking using cast iron, canoeing classes, kayaking classes, planting native gardens, bird watching for all different kinds of birds, all sorts of classes. It was held at the 4 H complex at Ferndale outside Little Rock, a beautiful area with a lake, dormitories and a beautiful large auditorium and a modern cafeteria. The last night ended with a banquet featuring wild game, such as pheasant, elk, antelope, deer, and various other game birds. There were all sorts of vendors set up outside the auditorium, and one was a lady selling these leaves of concrete! Hers were painted and finished with a sealer. I bought one, s small leaf, it was a sycamore leaf in light green. I still have it. Mind you, this was at least 20 years ago? Two years afterward I found the instructions in a gardening magazine.
Now when I finally decided to get Internet in 2017, I immediately got hooked on Pinterest and was astonished to see the instructions all over Pinterest! So I will check Pinterest to see if the pins are still there. They even had instructions on how to do the leaves flat and using them for stepping stones.

Thank you, Lynda! I didn't want to worry about paint chipping later.

We started with a pile of sand and patted the leaf down onto it so the sand was supporting the shape of the leaf. (Put the leaf upside-down so the veins at the bottom make a cool pattern.) Then pile portland cement on it, the instructions are on the package, just add water & sand. I said plaster earlier but I meant cement. Add a flat bottom if you want, allow to dry. I coated it with urethane after it had dried for about a week. Before the waiting to dry phase, it took less than 30 mins.

Tiffany, that's pretty much the "recipe I have, although I'm thinking plastic wrap ( Saran Wrap) is involved in the process at some point. I will check my Pinterest pins for the various ways to color them. So I took a pic of the one I bought; it sits on one of my living room bookcases. ( Im a Luddite; I own over 500 books!).

I am positive that back before the name change (just to give you time frame reference) there was an entire thread on how to make these. Try some key word searches.

I think you mean Quikcrete. Well, that's the name of that product that's sold around here. I used it when I set my new mailbox pole in the ground. Sets in about 30 to 45 minutes.

Just checked the garden art forum; the tutorial for concrete leave is on page 14 and is posted by Bubbles. I read through it and this is very similar to the one I have instructions for. Instead of using Portland cement I think Quikrete may be substituted. It may say that in this tutorial, I didn't read all of the posts.

I didn't have any trouble separating the leaves from the casting, but if one were to employ plastic wrap, it's probably used between the leaf and the cement. I think that would inhibit getting the exact pattern of veins, and it would be hard to not get extra wrinkles from the plastic wrap that aren't part of the leaf texture. I don't know, we didn't use any plastic wrap.

That's where the plastic is placed, I believe.
