I don't think so. Judging from the foliage, that photo is skewed toward aqua. Here's an image search of crowned heads showing what most photos of it look like. Take a mental average. https://www.google.com/search?....

To me, it's standards are too short and stiffly vertical in comparison with its falls. But I know a lot of people like it. It's all subjective. It's both a Wister and Dykes winner, so I should keep my mouth shut. Reminds me of a few months back when people (not me) were criticising Victoria Falls about its weak, floppy stems, and then seemingly in reaction the popularity poll boosted her up a whopping 21 places in the ranking last fall. Funny! Hilarious! People like what they like.

Andrea, judging from the image search, I think that Wintry Sky may be a slight improvement on Crowned Heads, with standards that are ever so slightly taller. But they still tend to be rather stiffly upright. I'd like to see standards that bow out a bit but then bow in again at the top to almost meet at the center. And I like to see the flowers neither bottom-heavy nor top-heavy. I think it's more graceful. But I have to admit that may be purely my own opinion after 71 years of living and gardening in gardens that are small enough that I have had to form strong opinions governing what I will allow in and what I won't. Other people with more space can be more flexible as to what they allow.

I have noticed that color innovations often come at first at the expense of form, but then eventually form gets bred back into them. I've seen it happen again and again. I've seen lots of color innovations race up the popularity charts, and then fall back down as ones with better form or newer color displace them. Then look at all the ones that move less than 4 spots or less in the popularity poll rankings from year to year. They are what I refer to as "the stable residents" and they all seem to share one thing in common: gorgeous form.

Of the older non-ruffled blues, Cahokia is a very nice sky blue. I have been looking for strong-growing sky-blues, and also prefer the tailored form. I've tried many. The best grower I've found, by far is Joyful Skies by Schreiner. It is much too ruffly for my tastes, but it blooms like crazy and also divides well. Check out this clump, which is of Joyful Skies and Pinkness.

welcome to the iris forum steve. what a truly gorgeous combination and beautiful clump together.

what part of the world do you live? if it's the u.s.; north, south east, west. the reason i ask, some irises do better on the west coast than the northeast, as an example. or they do better in the pacific northwest than the south west, as another geographic narrowing as another example.
