Dave, I created an error in the DB to illustrate.

ex.
Plant A. Arisaema nepenthoides
Cobra Lily (Arisaema nepenthoides)
synonym Arisaema ochraceum.

THEN added Plant B. Arisaema ochraceum

Can adding Plant B create the error message referencing Plant A?

What I'm getting at is there are plants being added to the DB that already exist.

I see what you mean, Evan.

When you go to add a plant, it checks to see if that plant already exists or not. But it's not checking those synonym fields and that's a bug. I'll get this fixed.

How would that affect a species which is valid, but is also a synonym of another species?

Hi Janet, Are you saying both are valid?

No Evan, not in the case you reported, but there are others where a valid species is also a synonym of another valid species if that makes sense!

Janet, can you give an example. I think I am running into that with the Hibiscus.

I can't give you an example at the moment Tee, but I know I have come across some. It's usually the case when one plant has at some time mistakenly been confused with another and has been given the same name, only to later find it's a different species which may already have been named as something else. Sounds confusing, I hope that makes sense.

Hi again Janet, Thanks for the memory jog. I think you're referring to an Invalid (abbreviation=I.) name. I've run across that myself although I can't recall precisely which plants.

edit.
I think this is an example: Arisaema robustum f. atropurpureum T.Koyama in Ohwi, Fl. Japan, Rev. ed.: 300 (1965), nom. inval.

It makes perfect sense, Janet.

And, Evan, I've come across that fairly frequently also ... with the hibiscus.
I garden for the pollinators.

Evan, no I don't think I meant what you think. What I meant was a plant having exactly the same synonym name as a validly named plant. Make sense? Rolling on the floor laughing

Tee, I make sense? That would be a first! Hilarious!

Janet Hilarious!

We'll come up with an example one of these days, I think.

You think you think something other than I think but you and Tee think the same thing. Got it. One of these days we'll come across an example. Smiling

Thanks for bumping this Evan. I've been knee deep on the parent plant thing but I'll get to this very soon!

Okay, I've got this fixed! Adding a plant, or editing the name of an existing plant, now checks the synonym fields for duplicates in addition to the main field. Thumbs up
