Many years ago, before I had a bit knowledge about plants, I got the Geum coccineum borisii. It self sowed in my garden and I'm listing the seeds on my website with the same name. But when I wanted to enter this one in the Plant Database, I got my doubts. Is it not just the Geum coccineum?

A search for Geum coccineum borisii on the Plant List tells me Geum coccineum is a synonym for Geum quellyon ..

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

No results found for Geum coccineum borisii on the RHS but there's named cultivars of Geum coccineum.

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/rhsplan...

A search on the RHS for Geum quellyon brings up Geum chiloense ..

A search on the Plant List tells me Geum chiloense is a synonym of Geum quellyon

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

It looks like it's now called Geum quellyon, but note the confidence level for synonyms has the same number of stars as the accepted name.

http://www.tropicos.org/Name/2...

We have an entry for Geum quellyon, the synonyms should be added.

Geum quellyon

But, we also have an entry for Geum coccineum so which we keep is dubious due to the confidence level, that usually means nobody can agree fully which they think it is.

Avens (Geum coccineum)

I found the Plant List a little disappointing, Janet. I was checking species names for Primula and the Plant List told me there are no accepted names for the Primula genus. None! Doesn't that seem odd?

Hmmm Zuzu, I wonder if Primula is being called something else? Look at the RHS, they have a veeery long list! Hilarious!

Well, I got a long list of Primula on the plant list, it must like me. Rolling on the floor laughing

Thank you for that Plant List link, Janet. It will be very helpful. I must have done something wrong. I searched for Primula acaulis to confirm some information I had seen about all of the plants in this species being reclassified as Primula vulgaris and received a message saying there are no accepted names in the Primula genus, so I guess I took it too literally, thinking it applied to the entire genus rather than the genus and species.

Incidentally, I received the same message for Primula vulgaris, so now I'm stumped.

I think where it states there are no accepted names it means for that particular name you searched for, the species given are unresolved.

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

I see what you mean!

http://www.theplantlist.org/tp...

Primula vulgaris is accepted in the RHS so that's what you should go with..

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

A search for Primula acaulis on the RHS brings up Primula vulgaris.

Good, because I had already changed the names of all the acaulis primulas in the database to vulgaris. But then I thought I had better find confirmation of this recategorization.

I'll use RHS for these types of problems. It seems to be more resolute about things. Perhaps more up to date?

Either more, or less, up to date! You have to call plants something, so the authority which sticks with what is known instead of waffling and calling it unresolved seems a good way to go. It is what it is until it becomes something else. Hilarious!
