Sprayed with Sevin and killed everything.

About 4 days ago I bought some Sevin concentrate. I then bought a new 1-gallon spray tank at Wal-Mart also. I mixed the concentrate with 4 oz of Sevin to 1 Gal of water. I mixed it in the tank and then sprayed my entire Grape vineyard, eight grape plants. I then sprayed my Blackberries, Blueberries, and Raspberries. Also sprayed my Roses, Blackgum, bearded trees. Finally I did my small orchard of young trees, Peach, Nectarine, and Cherry. Next morning when I went to check everybody out I found most everything brown and falling leaves. The only tree I didn't spray was a small dwarf Peach which remains in good health. The following morning I could see the grass was dying all around the spray pattern over everythin. As of this Am almost all are dead with no signs of life. We also had a small thunderstorm on the second day that was to late to affect the spray.
I have been using Sevin for time, like 30 years and from a small spray bottle as well as dust and it never caused problems. This was the first time I used the concentrate because of the quantity I needed to care for.
I plan to call Walmart and make them aware but seriously doubt they will be concerned unless thay have had a prior complaint. I will call the number listed on the concentrate but feel they will say I made a mistake. It looks like what Roundup or a similar product will do. I plan after rain is over to spray a portion of grass and see what happens.
This post is to see if anyone has ever this type of problem. I am 80 years old on my farm in Tennessee and am not senile at this point. Any input would be appreciated.

I haven't used sevin for a long time, but for bugs, sevin concentrate called for only 1 TBL to a gallon.
Also to spray in shade.
Anything i say, could be misrepresented, or wrong.

NO, what I have is Garden Tech Sevin. Directions call for 4 Oz to Gal of water. Also was hot but not sunny when sprayed. It is like what is in the bottle is not Sevin. Im going to spray the grass in an area when its not raining and see if it kills the grass. Thanks for your advice.

I agree with Philip, you mixed it too strong. The Garden Tech package says 1.5 - 3 oz. per gallon, depending upon what you are spraying. Personally, I would mix it at the 1.5 oz per gallon rate.

Also, the active ingredient in Sevin is Carbaryl. The warnings for Carbaryl say don't apply it to wet plants or in humid weather. And, it kills lawns.

The good news is that I doubt you killed your trees outright but they are fried. Take good care of them and wait for new leaves to sprout. You can check for life with a "scratch" test. Scratch the bark of a branch with your fingernail. If the tissue under the bark is green, the tree is alive. If the tissue under the bark is brown or hard, the tree is dead. Test different branches if you discover dead branches as some could be alive.

Way too strong of a concentrate. A tbsp per gallon would have been enough. Sevin is strong stuff. You never said what was your purpose in spraying anything in the first place.

Personally I wouldn't use Sevin for anything! I have NOT sprayed any insecticide on any of my plants or hundreds of orchids in some 30 years or so. I would like to live until at least 80 and I would be afraid that if I sprayed with Sevin, or anything really, I might not make it.

BigBill

Reason for spray was grapes and trees were infested with Japanese Beale and being eaten badly. The package does say to mix 4 oz to 1 Gal and makes no suggestions to particular plants. Live and learn and still learning at 80.

Apparently, Garden Tech has changed their formula. Sevin used to be Carbaryl but this year, its Zeta-Cypermethrin and they are recommending it be mixed at 4 oz per gallon.

Cypermethrin is a synthetic Pyrethroid so essentially, it is a synthetic version of Insecticidal Soap. Insecticidal Soap is my "go to" for everything and I have never had a problem with burnt leaves.

So, I think you should look to see what the active ingredient is in your bottle. And contact Garden Tech, send them photos, give them details (like you gave us) and ask if they know what is going on. While Googling images of the container, the old containers and the new containers look exactly alike.

Did you have an old container you used up using instructions from your new container? I'm out of ideas...

Well I just looked up your Zeta-Cypermethrin and it is classified as a type C carcinogen.
It was not

I just googled Sevin or carbaryl. It has an LD of 50 which is very bad!!
It has been around since 1958 and is very bad to use around honey bees and small rodents.

It has a specific formula made in a very specific way.
It said nothing about being a synthetic pyrethroid, akin to insecticidal soap. It has long been suspected of being a carcinogen with humans. You Sevin users are nuts in my opinion.

I don't know what to tell you except, here is the website. The label close-up shows Zeta-Cypermethrin as the active ingredient and the 'where to buy' button says my local Home Depot. It even shows a map, in case I can't find my nearest store.

All pesticides are bad for us and our environment (including the good bugs, birds, fish and frogs and the water supply). But every gardener has to make some personnal choices about how far they are willing to go in the bug fight. I would never spray everything in my yard to save my crop but I also have never battled as many bugs as other parts of the country seem to so I am in no position to judge others' choices.

Thank's everyone for help and insight on my problem. I have never used the concentrated Sevin, just the small spray bottle, premixed on the shelf, I had just purchased this from Walmart. It is the new ingredients listed as Zeta-cypermethrin .35 % . It also states that it is not harmful to lawns.
I will go out on the limb here and say that this is the new container and instructions but houses the older type ingredients. Should that be true, which I am almost sure it is, I would have mixed a much stronger, 4/gal and it would, in fact, do a number on the lawn as well. I am trying to write to the manufacturer in Georgia as suggested by Daisyl and according to Bigbill it is not listed for use in US.
I can not prove without diagnosis what is in the container but I guess I could have a Lab check it out. I will see what the makers and distributors have to say. I have lost a lot of Thank You! Grapes, Berries, several deciduous trees and now looks like some of the Roses,
Once again, thank you all. I will post whatever I find out.

Carbaryl is the old Sevin ingredient. The new one is Cypermethrin and it is synthetic pyrethroid. It looks equally deadly to me.

Carbaryl has been banned in Europe.

Carbaryl is another name for Sevin, not an ingredient.

I said that I wouldn't use an insecticide if you paid me! But I can certainly understand if you are growing acres and acres of crops and they are under attack by some beasties! I don't know what I would do in that case. I am glad to only worry about 75 orchids, some cherry and plum tomatoes and some bell peppers. Oh I forgot three big dahlias. But those guys are much easier to safeguard then acres of things. Something is making a salad bar out of my coneflowers but it is a small price to pay.

According to recent news, Sevin will no longer be made soon, the old stuff was purchased by a new manufacturer and they are using new ingredients, and discontinuing Sevin. I have used dust for years, never cared for the wet stuff - always too hot for where I live to be good to the plants.
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

I have decided to forgo the use of fungicide or pesticide in the future. I am going to follow through with the supplier of the product as it is my belief that I received the old product in the new container. It remains to be seen what response I get back from the maker and supplier. I lost a lot in this problem as well as the time invested in the planting and raising of my Berries, Trees, Grapes, etc.
Thanks again to all

How hot was it when you sprayed? Sevin will burn leaves even at proper concentrations if it is too hot.
