I am getting ready to pot up the clematis I just received from the the co-op. These will stay in pots for awhile and maybe even until next season. What size pots should I use?

Gallons work fine. I always pot mine up from wholesale vendors and keep them over the winter. I was just looking at mine from the co-op and from Donahue, and I haven't lost a one. Isago was the strongest grower, growing out the holes in the pots and into the ground so much that my husband had to dig them out.

If you can get pine straw mulch I put some on top of my pots so no weeds. You could also sprinkle a little weed preventer on top of the soil.

Thanks, Polly. I've got plenty of those gallon nursery pots, that's for sure. I tip my hat to you.

You're welcome. Make sure you keep the weeds out. Those tap roots on some of the weeds can crowd out the clems.

Excellent deal! One of the clems I got is about 6" high (it had already started growing when I got it) and is really looking good. I bought some from another source a couple of years ago, and while the plants were fine and the price was good, there is just no comparison! Look at this little rascal:

Yours looks very good, woofie. I just got my co-op box a few days ago and have them potted up now. I have a couple of others I had put in small pots to give to a friend, and they are doing great! They look about like yours ... and after only a couple of weeks. Thumbs up
