forgive my ignorance.... how old does asparagus have to be before it produces and anything special about growing them?? Obviously I have never been around them being grown...... do they handle the heat and humidity ok or are they better for cooler temps?
where are you located. they will produce a few edible spears on 3 yo roots and more on 4 and can cut for 6 weeks on 5 yo the older the root the bigger and the better the spears. they do very well in most any zone but in zone 8b-11 the roots are short lived they dont have the winter dormancy to rest.
they like well drained soil the best and you dont want to put to deep in garden. You start with a trench 6-8 in deep plant the roots and as they grow you continue to cover the roots over a 6 month period.
