I have noticed that often I will get more true colours when taking photos in the morning or late afternoon, once the sun is no longer directly on the bloom I am trying to photograph. Of course, sometimes I want that direct sun look as well.

These are both the same plant, but under different lighting conditions. I enjoy how the direct sun seems to make the blooms darker and almost glisten, whilst the second photo (still daylight but not in direct sun) shows the colours more accurately.
Of course, if it's too late in the evening, it does tend to drain the colour (or the life) out of the bloom (for this reason, Gene, I prefer your morning photo over the evening one). I don't generally take photos at twilight unless there's something specific I want to capture.
