Hello,
I am curious what everyone does for their iris. Can you please share what you use and when to apply. I have several new ones planted in the last 2 weeks. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Teresa

For me, when i plant irises, i work in compost and manure into the area along with alpaca pellets if i have some. I fertilize in the spring mixed with like some worm tea or compost tea.

Do you ever use a slow release in the Spring? My niece has some horses and a area with aged manure. I haven't gotten over to haul it yet but I am sure it would be helpful.

Richard lives where it is hot and dry. Teresa, I don't think it would be wise to use manure where the ground stays damp. Do you get rain in the summer?

I would think it would encourage rot, but ask those in your area.

I think it is generally not wise to fertilize in the fall if you have colder winters. It seems to stimulate late growth that is too tender to deal with the freezing temps and will promote rot.

OK, I was wondering about that. I will just wait until Spring. Do you fertilize maybe a month before bloom time?

Six weeks before bloom time here Teresa. That is the only time I fertilize. That is approximately mid February so I remember it on valentines day. That should not be a rule for everyone as that date is not necessarily six weeks from their bloom time.

@bluegrassmom, i do use a fertilizers in the irises. I apply it as in how everyone else has mentioned, about 6 weeks before. Mine bloom in April, so I fertilize the first week of March.
