This is one of those plants that Aunt Bett used as a panacea for those who had 'ailments' that weren't really identifiable. I think it almost always worked.
A few years ago when I dug into my old notes and references for an article I was writing about Heal all, it occurred to me that if it worked as a panacea, it should work well as a general tonic. I remember what Aunt Bett said when she gave it to someone who simply said 'she was ailing' but gave no specifics: "Well, it's for sure heal all won't hurt you, it'll only help."
I keep dried leaves too, for winter teas.
So several times a week now I add a leaf or two to my chamomile tea in the evenings. If you rinse the leaves really well in cold water before steeping them, you can avoid the bitter taste that comes from the tannin they contain. A drop or two of honey in the tea helps too. It's like she said: 'It for sure won't hurt you, it'll only help.'
Thanks, Christine, for a very nice article.
