I tried last night to remember when I started them and even though I remember our jaunt through the back roads and even remember visiting an old cemetery or two that day, I can't remember the year. It had to be in the 80's and it was during a spring break from school. So mid to late 80's I think. The tree in front lost a lot of height when the ice smashed it, but its form is getting much better now. The one in back didn't seem to suffer from the weight of the ice but then the pole gave it much needed support.

*sigh* I've been wanting to grow wisteria here. We do get them in the stores, but I've read that sometimes it takes them 20+ years to get to a point that they want to bloom. Yours is just heavenly. I'm so jealous.

I gave rooted runner to a friend last year about this time and she tells me it has a tiny bloom this year, so maybe the 20 year thing isn't true. I hope you get one to grow.

Not a bad idea! Actually, I have an old garage sale kitchen chair with a busted seat... I was thinking it would be neat to see the vine growing up from inside the missing seat. Rebar would add stability, though, for sure. Maybe a shepherd's crook?

Remember, it will grow like a tree and will get as tall at minimum as the bar it grows up. Look at the photos of the back yard tree and enlarge the one on the right. I'm only 5' tall so I keep it trimmed underneath to my height which just happens to be the cross bar of the clothesline pole. There's enough space beneath it for me to sit on a bench. But if you wove it through the seat of a chair, it might take the chair with it as it grows upward.

Teasing, but you also have to remember that those first few weaves have to be pretty tight to hold it upright.
Try it, you never know.

Beautiful wisteria trees, I know someone who has a vine and maybe I can sweet talk her into letting me have a slip of it to try. Going to see her in mid April so I can dream about it till then.

Let me know if you don't get one from your friend, Pegi. I could get a rooted piece or two for you a little later in the spring. I think it would ship that far fairly well. We could try anyway.

I love your Wiststeria trees Sharon, they are georgeous. I haven´t seen any wisterias here except in greenhouses. But If I could get seeds or cuttings I would love to try them in my garden. The summers are getting warmer here so it might be worth trying.

How long and how warm are your summers? My wisteria remains green for about 8 months of the year, and I don't know if Iceland has that many months of warm. I can send you seeds and a rooted vine this year if you think it would travel. I've received seeds from France, but I don't know about your country and its laws about mailing live plants there.

After about 30 years, i still love them!

Thank you Sharon. Our summers are cool, the warmest months are June, July and August with temps. 60° - 70°F. May and September can be nice with temperatures 50° - 60°F, some times higher. April is our spring month, but can be really cold some times, and October the same but it usually does not snow until the middle of November.

It is OK to mail seeds, but with plants it is complicated, especially if they have soil on the roots. I would love it if you would send some seeds later this year. I´m not sure about cuttings, but I know that people bring cuttings with them from abroad. Mail from the U.S. usually takes a week, some times 6 days.to get here. I would really like to try Wisteria I have a small but sheltered garden which usually is warmer in summer than most other places. I am going to plant rooted cuttings of Clematis alpina this summer. Clematis alpina is the only clematis I have seen here yet and it seems happy here.

Remind me later in fall and I'll send you seed pods. I've never taken cuttings, only rootings of runners, and I'm not sure I trust cuttings to go that far. We can try though. I can always send both. If we can keep the end of it moist enough and if you stick it in cinnamon or a rooting agent when it gets there, then maybe.

I'm wistful over Wisteria. I've always loved it. Yours is beautiful! I love them especially woven into a tree. The best are woven into trees. I'm now north enough that I can have Wisteria. I just might.
