What low growing Sempervivum can I plant that will survive in zone 3a, at 3400 ft above sea level, with cool nights, in a rocky area along with Sedum, that the deer won't eat?? Blinking

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't get as cold as you, but I would try first with the common one that you can probably get for the cost of postage from a lot of us (including me).

Rabbits and squirrels eat my sempervivum, so I don't know if the deer will leave them alone.

If you're able to provide some cover in winter in the form of snow or leaves, I would think most of them would probably do good in your zone.

Thank you tabby, for your kind offer, but you can't mail live plants to Canada without certification, which I understand is very expensive to get..

I know very little about these plants so what is the "common" one? Shrug!

Drat, I have red squirrels, chipmunks, voles and field mice so they may eat them. Grumbling

I don't think mice or voles have eaten mine, and I have a LOT of mice and voles near them.
But I do protect them against the rabbits which I know eat them, by putting chicken wire over them in the winter. They don't get eaten in the spring, summer and fall when there are better things to eat.

If you see plain green large sempervivum at gardens centers, it's almost always the common one.

Margaret, Drought Smart Plants is an excellent place to get your hardy sedum and sempervivum. She will be able to help you choose the best semps for your needs.

The deer, mice and voles have never eaten mine, but I think it is because our winter is pretty mild and we have so much else for them to eat.
I do use the black bird netting over my raised beds in the fall and winter to keep the jays and squirrels from digging. They make such a mess, then I have oak, walnut and hazelnut trees coming up everywhere in the spring. : (

Chris, most winters we have good snow cover, but more so in that location as my DH blows the snow on there from the driveway. Hilarious!

Thanks Tabby, that looks like a great site, lots of info and photos. I saved the page so I can check it out later. Green Grin!

Thanks Lynn, I think this will be an interesting project, I haven't done anything different in quite some time. Thumbs up

In spite of recent reclassifications to the USDA hardiness zone map, I still believe I'm in 3A. I have plus or minus 120 different named sorts and another dozen or so unnamed ones doing just fine outdoors in raised beds.

Wow Kate, that is a lot of cultivars you have there, nice raised beds. Sure gives me hope that which ever ones I plant for my zone should do fine. Thanks so much for your input.

Kate, I'm always amazed when I see all your raised beds! Do you do crafts with your semps too?

What a beautiful photo that is Kate. I love the dividers you have in some of them.
