Oh they sure do live in the north. I get slugs in my garden a lot. I will definitely try the coffee grounds.

Casshigh said:We can do the caffeinated coffee! Coffee grounds are a recommended addition to compost piles. Sounds like a win-win! We pour out left over caf. coffee every day. Thank you, Michele.

NEVER pour out old coffee! Either freeze it as coffee ice cubes so you can have a stronger iced coffee in the summer, or add it to your compost pail. (or use it to water your plants, or make "war cake" with it (recipe at link): http://mostlycajun.com/wordpre...

I have yesterday and today's leftover coffee and grounds ready to take outside to place around the daylilies. I'll pass on iced coffee (yuck! but I'm not a big coffee drinker).

I have had them here but on a very small controllable scale and have not seen any in several years. Maybe they came in with some plantings from elsewhere??

Ok, has anybody seen the "Giant African Snails" that are invading Miami??? I saw an article on them a few weeks ago and I just cringe everytime I think about it. It's reported that they make such as mess when they are ran over by a car, they can cause the car to wreck!!

One day last week I was working in my pots of daylilies, natuarlly, and I felt something cold, wet and about 6" long on the back of my arm. Of course, "Giant African Snails" was the first thing to pot into my head since I was handling mulch that comes from who knows where. I stopped and very nervously turned my arm so I could see the back of it and it was a wet leaf about 6" long. I decided then and there that I was reading too much and allowing way too many things to stay in my subcounious. I can do without snails that get as big as my fist!!!! It's also reported that they can destroy a garden in one night!!!!!

Michele, you may need to buy coffee by the truck load if they head your way!

I think I will stay in the north - our seasons may be later, and shorter, but we don't have any "giant" anythings - except mosquitoes! ~Jan

Before Mona had mentioned it, I actually had come across some photos of the giant African Snails when I was googling something and said to my friend, " how would you like to find one of these munching on your daylily"?
