I have 2 planters with shorter clems. Bijou 18 - 24 inches and Vagabond supposed to be less than 6 feet.
Bijou is in its second year.

Does anyone else have clems in planters?
I would like to add one more but need suggestions as to variety.

Probably. I found one at the local grocery store last year. They were selling them for Mother's Day.

JoAnn, the clem in the link is mine (thank you, zuzu!) I got it from a mamajack sale. It is on the third year in that container, has only grown to about three feet so far, and is really pretty. I'd sure recommend it.

How old is that clem. Its just so handsome.

I went to Home Depot last Sunday for the first time this year(plant browsing only)and they had some nice looking H.F. Young clematis and I came near buying it. I lost my comtesse de bouchard last year. Those at HD had a lot of growth on them..it was so tempting..but with this hot weather 90-102 degrees; I chickened out. I would rather wait till Fall or early Spring to get one. Don't know if they sell them in the early Fall but it just seems if you can plant some things in the Fall, it has a better chance at making it, does that make sense? I think that clematis was in prunning group#2..I know I looked it up but should have written it down so I won't have to look it up again. I have in my garden journal a list of all the clematis and what prunning group they are in. I only want Group#3.

I have seeds from a friend's multi-blue clematis and I forgot to plant them. I know it takes a long time to grow from seeds, but I'd sure like to try. I am not a patient gardener though.

I know some of you probably think I ask a lot of stupid questions but Wintersowing has really opened my eyes and mind to growing flowers via seeds. Before 2009, it was not unusual for us to spend as much as $500-$700 for starter plants, and mulch; and most of what we bought was annuals. The only flower that I knew how to collect the seeds from were marigolds..I have learned so much from the gardening website forums and from experienced gardeners so willing to share their gardening experience and knowledge.

I know I probably ask some stupid questions but isn't that a way of learning? The internet has broaden that knowledge, as well as the desire to be able to do things an easier way than all the technical writing that blows my mind and I find boring. Hi Pippi, there's no such thing as stupid questions, so ask away! Yes, clematis can be planted in fall as long as they have enough time for their roots to get established. I had originally only wanted group 3 clematis also but ended up with a bunch of group 2 that I couldn't resist. We have rabbit problems in the winter, and they usually chew nearly all of my clematis down to the ground. I still get lots of growth and beautiful flowers on the group 2 plants. They just bloom later than usual.

The internet has made learning very easy with so much information at our fingertips. And I think the people here are extra friendly and helpful - it's a wonderful site and I'm learning a lot here too!
