Some hybrids are notoriously fussy bloomers. I start old true seed from origional stock that have been treated with green powder to inhibit wilt disease. Some are known for their tough stocks and blooms from seed catalogues best grown from true proven winners in early spring set out in semi shade areas in pots in the garden in May ,June in my zone.

I have grown snaps in several different states/ zone, clay and sand.
They smell like bubblegum to me. I just love `em.
All types were bought in flats.
Planted after last full moon in May (= no frost in present micro climate).
Late day dappled or full shade, depending on heat.
Place small amount of bonemeal in bottom of planting hole, work in well.
Water plant in well.
There after, water once per week, with 1/4 mirical grow. No wet feet.
Prune/ deadhead often.

Mums.
I buy in early fall.
Soak rootbound pots for hour or so. With sharp knife, divide plant into thirds.
Work up soil in planting hole well. Loosen plant roots a little to promote growth. Plant, water in well. Little mirical grow or fish fert., easy does it.
I have several different colors that have survived several years for me. The last two years I`ve neglected fertilizer and pinching back in June. Still, they all seem happy this fall.
Hoping this input helps some.
Happy Gardening! Smiling

I, too, suffered from snapdragon wilt. The healthy plants (purchased & planted from cell packs in spring) displayed wilt one stem at a time, in my east-exposure annual bed. I pulled one plant which revealed sheared roots. I chalked it off to insect/garment damage. But it only happened to the snapdragon plant, which were closely interplanted with other perennial and annual plants in my cottage garden.
The following year I detected the wilt problem with the carnations. So it's still an unsolved mystery.
Here is a picture of the late summer garden. This cluster had some wilted stems which I trimmed.
