I thought this was Burma Star, but I've decided the shape of the petal and the color don't match. I've been all over our Database and all over the net and I still can't find one that I feel is a match. The petals of mine are long and slender with a pointed tip.

The color is a very dark mostly bluish purple and matches this image perfectly. Burma Star seems to be mostly a reddisn purple. I know colors aren't always exact, but shouldn't the petal shape match?

Anybody know?

Sharon, I think you might struggle with this. All I can search for is the colour blue on this Clematis site, there's a lot of them.

Hi, Sharon.

Is this plant blooming for you now? (possibly a group 1?)

Are the blooms ever double, or are they always as they appear in your photo?

About what size are the blooms?

Is it a large vigorous plant, or one of the daintier clematis?

Thanks Janet, I'll take a look.

Chelle, around the first of February, an acquaintance dropped off these two huge pots each filled with a trellis and a plant cut back to within about 8 inches of the soil.

'This is some kinda vine,' she said. 'It's been outside for years and it'll have a few purple blooms.'

That's all I knew about it until it started growing, leafing out and now blooming. I've never had a clem before, so I don't know a thing about them except the name. It's huge already, full of blooms that are all identical and about the size of my opened hand. Nothing dainty about it.

The second one I can say the same about, except I did find that it's Kingfisher, so now it has a name and is in the database. So that's about all I know. They are both gorgeous. I thought they were two of the same until I saw the centers were of a different color.

I'll look through your link, Janet.
Thanks.

Throw the shot over on the clematis forum too Sharon, get a few more to take a stab at it! If you get more bloom, that would help as often the early shots can looks quite different.

If those stamens open up more, add another shot of those too, so we can see the color.

Different light this morning, cloudy, overcast. These closest/largest blooms are 3 days old.

It's hard to tell, I am trying to find a match for those small tightly packed dark anthers. Many where the bloom shape and color almost match have larger lighter stamens.

Here's the home page of the Clematis site Sharon, I guess a search doesn't work on a link.

Yamato is very close, Sue. Closest I've seen, I think.
I think the petal shape is wrong for Burma Star.

Edit: Thanks Janet! I can open this one.

Yamato has reddish anthers on top of pale filaments, yours looks to be the other way around Sharon.

Yes, I really added that as an example of the bloom almost looking right but not the anthers, I was hoping maybe Sharon can get a better detailed shot of them. Green Grin!

Is it a short clematis, Sharon? Could it be Fleuri?

Clematis Fleuriâ„¢

It looks purple in your latest photos. Here's a search page for the clems. Try searching under different shades of purple and blue (in the bloom color box). I looked up a few, but as Sue said, most of them have lighter anthers.

It is shorter/smaller than the other one (Kingfisher) that came with it and both are in the same environmental conditions. However, the bloom is the same size as the Kingfisher, large as my hand.

Thanks ladies, Zuzu, I'll keep looking.

Goldfinch says Blue Ravine, and I think she's right.

Thanks so much for all your help! I have a long way to go before I know much about Clematis!

So do I! Goldfinch, however, is rapidly becoming our resident clematis maven. She's done wonders with the clematis database. Evie lost interest in it almost as soon as she created it in Cubits, but Goldfinch has been working on it in earnest, adding lots of new plants, filling in the info for all of them, and adding comments to each entry. She's amazing!

She is amazing. Took her about a minute to have the answer!

Thanks again for all your help. These are my first two ever clems and I'm a real novice as you can plainly tell.

I avoided them for years because the old rule of "Roots in the shade, blooms in the sun" seemed so impossible to follow, but when it was later changed to "Don't let the roots dry out," clematises became a staple in my garden. I don't have any plant that wants its roots to be dried out. Hilarious!
