I just use the easy to say common name Brazillian Red Cloak. I have grown this plant for a few years and friends have asked for me to root them cuttings. I have tried a few times with no luck. Anyone have firsthand experience with propagation? I have seedlings that come up nearby, but I am thinking it may be a few years before flowering.

Scott, I did grow mine from a cutting, but it has been in the ground for years and now is 10ft. tall every summer before I cut it back. Can't really remember what I did to get it to root and grow. I've never had seedlings of mine, though.

All I can think of is try some cuttings at different times of the year. Some things root easily if you time it right (i.e. you get lucky)..

Thanks Elaine! I will keep trying.
The largest seedling that came up this spring is growing in full sun and is 3' tall now.

The dozen or so shade seedlings are only 6"-12" tall.

Mother Nature provided me with many broken stems after throwing nickel size hail yesterday.

90% of the flower clusters were also removed in the fury.

Oh man! What a shame. We had very violent storms yesterday afternoon too, but no hail that I know of. Just 3in. of rain in under an hour in some places. I got about 2in. For sure the loudest, brightest flashy thunderstorms that I can remember.

Wow, we've had a couple of very short lived showers here in the Daytona Beach area the past couple of weeks, heard thunder once yesterday and it rained for about 10 minutes but that's about it ... sounds like y'all are getting the good stuff (well, not so good regarding hail) over there on the other coast.

Elaine, I placed a few of the broken stems from the storm in water and I now see the start of roots.

Hurray! I'm going to take some cuttings this week, then. This must be "the time" of year.

I have rooted cuttings of this plant with success by just putting them in soil. I also find (my plant is big) that the branches will root where they touch the ground.

I had one in the greenhouse years ago. It was lovely but was a huge space hog in there so I removed it. I loved it, I trailed it outside here but it didn;t last.

I had one, it was a space hog, and space I don't have, it was one that a gardener friend rooted from clippings off her plant that I admired. It grew really wide, about six foot and a good five foot tall, endured some back to back freezes, but it never flowered in five years. I finally dug it up since it was taking over my gingers, I imagine it just didn't have enough sun.

Hi Scott,

I think I remember having some success with air layers years ago. I'm a big fan of this plant.
