My pond is 10' x 20' and 30 inchs deep, two years old. Does someone know how many gold fish this size pond will support. These things are breeding like crazy. Thanks for any help. Fred

For gold fish 100 gallons per 2" of fish. they require a bit more because they create so much waste.

Goldfish do breed like crazy. When we had goldies, they were spawing monthly from April to October. I would think in your warmer area, that spawning would start sooner for you.

When you have the number of fish in your pond that you are happy with and feel the fish levels are at a healthy level, you can get some bullfrog tadpoles and put them in your pond to help control the offspring numbers. Not sure how you feel about this - I know in my pond, the tads have been a Godsend and I have koi that don't breed as often.

Thanks for the response's, I may already have too many. I think my pond holds about 1200 gallons and I can count about 25 fish anywhere from 10 inchs to a couple of inchs. Have lots about have inch long. Do these frogs stay in the pond year around?

We have put in tads for the last couple of years running. Yes, they stay in the pond, however - I do think some hop off as well. I think we only have 1 frog now and over the last couple of years, I know we have bought dozens. Oh well, as long as they serve the purpose, that is fine for me. It was becoming next to impossible to catch the small fry without draining the pond every fall.

Oh, he's so cute. I do love froggies. Spunky, are you sure that your pond is only 1200 gallons? Based on the measurements seems like it should be closer to 2000.

Mary the pond is tapered so the deepest part is only a couple of feet wide in the center of the pond, There is a good chance I am wrong about the gallons. I also have some sort of large grey and green frogs that come to the pond to breed, do not know what they are or if they eat fish. Will try to get a photo of them.

Oh neat. I love bullfrogs but they would eat your fish in nothing flat. lol. I am still mucking out my pond of the winter growth. First year the bottom and sides were covered with a thick layer of some green stuff that had bubbles all over it. Just sweep a broom across the top and all the bubbles float to the top of the pond.

tbat would depend on the size of the fish, which is why I like them for taking care of the fry.

True. I remember a huge bullfrog we (Dad and I) found in the mud in Tennessee. I must have been around six I guess so he seemed pretty huge to me.

Formula for figuring gallons: length X width X average depth X 7.5. Hope this helps.
Doesn't sound like your pond has overload of fish at this point.

Thanks Bonnie, I just don't know how to arrive at the average depth because of the way its tapered, if that makes sense.

I am assuming you are talking about the depth? Mine goes from 4 ft at the deepest and goes to 3 1/2 feet deep. Bonnie is right with the formulas she gave. I have found the easiest way is to check your water gauge in your house when filling your pond. It is important to know how much your pond holds in the event you need to add medications, bacterias, enzymes or the like.

Id like to see a picture of the green/gray frog. It sounds like it could be a cuban tree frog.I have to put mine in the freezer to kill them. They are not good. If you dont have a picture, just look them up
If you find one, freeze it. The are more a frog, not a toad.
I am SO not a killer of things, but these are really not good.

What do they do that makes them not good?

Eat native species. Have slime on body that can cause itch on human skin. They are exotic from Cuba and don't belong here. Uiv. of Fl. prof. is working on spray to eradicate them. Called Stop Hop. It can't come soon enough for me.
