Forgot to mention that I'm now having some real success with stored pollen, but never with frozen, only refrigerated. I just pull stamens before we hit 80 degrees or so, and put them (along with whatever part of the stamen stem comes with it) right into a pillbox and then into the house (below 80 degrees). They go into the fridge anywhere from right away to up to a day later. So far, big healthy maturing pods are setting from crosses made with refrigerated pollen that has been up to 10 days old. I usually give them about five minutes outside of the fridge before I use them for crossing. But, the pillbox is many-celled, so most fridge pollen gets in and out of the fridge each day (from 45 to 90 degrees cycle), and so far, it has worked well. After about 10 days, though, the pollen does get degraded and does not set further pods for me.
Maybe next year I will try the frozen route again to see if I can get a first viable pod to set. But, for now, 10 days of access to refrigerated stored pollen has been a great boon!
