upat5 said:Paw paws EVERYWHERE! Kind of sad actually because though they are native and I love them and I'd never hurt a leaf on their branches....they crowd/shade other plants out. There wouldn't be so many if it weren't for the deer. The deer won't touch paw paws but they mow everything else down leaving the paw paws to take more than their fair share.

Not much will eat pawpaws (Asimina triloba). Great plant BTW. They contain a number of annonaceous acetogenins which make them distasteful. Many of those same compounds are under study for everything from pesticides to anti-cancer properties. One company used to pay people (not a lot BTW) for dried pawpaw twigs for use in making safe anti-lice shampoo. While it was effective, the company no longer makes it though recipes are online. I digress, the various parts of the tree taste horrible. Also, due to their underground spread, you get clonal groups...even thickets. Since they need an outside pollen source to set fruit, and are notoriously poorly pollinated, that doesn't help fruit-set much.
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.

I find the taste of pawpaws rather pleasant . The trick is to let them get real ripe (semi-soft)
Normally I let them start to fall from the tree before picking. I think possum really like the fruit here, because there are seldom any uneaten if on the ground.

Doing some garden clean-up yesterday, and surprised to see this praying mantid by our screened door, I thought it would be done for the season already. I was hoping it will confront the errant grasshopper still hanging around!

Yep...the fruit needs bletting...like medlars.

BTW, I like them as well...and several cultivars are the pinnacle of pawpaw flavor...which can range from overripe bannana to even melon notes. The releases by Peterson's Pawpaws are fine (like Shenandoah & Susquehanna) as is NC-10 released by Kentucky State University. There are others as well.

We have been having hard freeze warnings this December and been really chilly at night with temps in the mid 30F's lately. So surprised to see this praying mantid at this time of the year. Hiding very well in my container with assorted bulbs:

Wow! Is it large? Might be some kind of dung beetle or carrion beetle. It looks more like a dung beetle though.

I saw a carrion beetle that impressed me recently, American carrion beetle:

This was another weird looking beetle. I didn't get a good picture but you might be able to see that it has spikes and horns...

Thank you kindly, Christine! That main pic didn't look that much like mine, but other ones did! And yeah, pretty big. I think my area might be a bit toward the western limit of their range. I'm pretty sure I've never seen one before, but there was one spotted near Hunt in Kerr Co. Texas, also.

I did notice the link said the Eastern Hercules Beetle range ended in the eastern part of Texas. But if they found one in Kerr County...

Insects don't know they're supposed to stay inside what the so-called experts have declared their range to be! I've noticed that.
