I've been wanting these for years - so do you have some that you may want to divide? I know my zone is on the edge but I gotta try!

I had purchased a couple of bareroot plants from Breck's but they died ....they were small and shriveled.
Where do you purchase them? I only found a couple of places online.

Thanks, T-mail me.

I think they are a very pretty plant , I have tried from some seed a few years ago with no success and purchased a plant once but it did not over winter Confused
Don't see them in the local nurseries here.

I have tried growing from seed a few times. Only very fresh seed germinated, never bought seed. Last year there were some plants available locally. I bought a few but only one overwintered. When I got them home, the Columbine were also in bloom. They happened to be the same color and I found they had the same effect in the garden especially from a little distance.. Also the flowers photograph well but they are small in real life. I mention that not to talk you out of them but just so you aren't disappointed when you see them for the first time.

I have found Sunningdale tends to revert to plain green foliage and/or does not thrive well. It did well the first few years, then kind of petered out. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't have a garden any longer but I've grown a lot of Astrantias and they are a very popular and fairly common perennial here in the UK with some wonderful new varieties available. As they thrive in partial shade with moisture rententive soil I wonder if they would do well for you in Texas.
They really are attractive though, Sunningdale particularly and I've not had the problem of that one reverting to green.
They are also excellent bee plants.

Mine died out. The climate is just too dry for them here.

Sunningdale is beautiful, worth growing just for the foliage. Betsy, Sue makes a good point about the Texas climate. I'm not sure they will survive the Texas summer unless you have shade and constant moisture where you are. Even NJ summers can stress them.

I still have the original six plants that I bought over six years ago as a buy three get three free. These are a few of all the original group of plants that I bought that are still alive Rolling on the floor laughing . Mine is under a gigantic evergreen tree close to a gutter downspout. I top dress them in the spring and that's it. I noticed in the last couple years that seedlings are popping up close by. Love the variegated one that you have Frank. They are small blooms as Loretta pointed out. Anyone interested can have some for postage next spring.

As much as I like them, I would rather grow plants that do better here. I once had 3 Montauck Daisies, and I gave the last one to my friend in Pennsylvania before it died too, as it was one its "last legs"! She took pictures of it blooming! It is beautiful. It just likes that natural climate of summer rain.

I plan to have a watering system installed next year. I have lost other plants that were not suitable...delphinium, monkshoods, and hydrangeas among others. I really like having a blue hydrangea. Maybe after the watering system is installed. A lot of plants that are weedy in moister climates such as lamium, anemone and moneywort have petered out as well. It will be fun to try some of those again.

I can't grow them well , here, either. Too warm (continuously hot, summer days & nights too) as they apparently prefer cooler weather & can tolerate some warm periods, just not extended periods of it, as here, or especially in Texas. Unless, you live up in the mountains, like maybe in Colorado or way up North? Some do have a little bit larger blooms, but it is an interesting flower. I ordered some once & they grew soon after arriving, then began flowering quickly after that & then declined to thrive in the heat of mid spring time...

I planted a couple of white/ivory Astrania a few years ago with the plan to cut the flowers to include in a wedding arrangement. The plants seem to be invasive - popping up nearby and the original plants are taking up too much space. I wish I would have planted the pink variety! So much prettier!

I have wanted to try them for a couple years now , for some reason they don't seem to carry them at our local nursery.

anyone know if they transplant well?

I would gladly send postage or a trade for some seedlings
