My salvias in the front yard are all blooming, but they have started to flop over the sidewalks and walkways. If I cut them down now, will they rebloom in June?

I may have to trim back Wendy's Wish too. Those little buggers took off to the moon! They don't mind city of Austin water, that's for darn sure!

I'm not sure about hyssops. Someone else will have to answer, but the tall garden pholx seem to do well.

Sandi, I cut my salvia (coccinea red) back once I collected the seeds. These grow like gangbusters and get too tall and needs trimming back. They will rebloom.

Do you want to do the Texas pruning method "Whack 'Em Back", or more shortening/shaping? I routinely shorten salvias because they grow way too large and floppy on the Gulf Coast, but I only whack em back in early spring and late summer/early fall. Just what I do...

I had to give away 'Wendy's Wish' - it got enormous fast last summer even w/ the drought and that was just its first year. It's now eating a bed at our master gardener gardens.

That must be "be careful what you "wish for" salvia! I have one Wendy and it's behaving, so far.

I took the plunge and whacked Henry and Augusta Duelberg nearly to the ground in early May, after posting question about cutting back. Henry is full and blooming again. Augusta is coming back more slowly. But I remember someone once told me, if I was going on vacation for 2 weeks, to cut the salvias way back before leaving. When we returned they'd but up and blooming again. Well, it took 3 weeks, but they did come back, fresh and not floppy...so far. They are located in the Hell Strip out by the street.

Oh neat. If they survived and prospered on your Hell Strip, I may take a machete to some of mine. Wonder what they'd do in July-August if they were whacked then...let's just see how they bounce back during 2 months of 100F...that would be the "hardiness" test.

We're hitting the mid 90s now. I don't think they would have bounced back from cutting in July or Aug. Last year was brutal heat. They did come back strong early this spring without any extra watering, tho. All the salvias are doing well. This was my first year for poppies. Some of those are still blooming. I bought several varieties at Barton Springs Nursery and planted them all in one particular space. I've collected the seeds, beating the pill bugs to them, so maybe I can sow them in the fall and see if they return.

I love poppies. What kind of poppies? When did you plant them? Do you have any pix to share?

I tried "bread seed" (euphemism) by seed a couple of years ago and they were a bust. I probably started them way too late and it hotted up before they did much of anything. In this area I'd need to get them in by October. To find plants, I'd need to make the 60 mile trek to Houston.

I bought six varieties . All were plants about to bloom. I think they were $1 each. I can' remember all the names. One was Iceland. I'll have to look at the tags.

Finally scrumbled around under the bushes and found the tags.

The peach one just finished blooming. They all lasted longer than I expected. I think I'll buy them again.

Thanks for the update. I'll try to find some starts this autumn or sow some seeds. Sounds like you got several different kinds - one of them should grow for me I hope.

California poppies did great for me this spring. I bought even more seeds to sow in other beds for next year.
