Called the White Elephant palm, this is one of my most favorite palms that I have ever had. It is the sole member of the genus Kerriodoxa. It is rare because it takes both a male and a female plant in order to set seed, so there aren;t that many seeds available, and because it is only found in an extremely tiny location in the coastal rainforests of Thailand. It is a complete circular frond fan palm, with striking jet black stems and silvery white undersides on the fronds. It is extremely slow growing (making it a great greenhouse specimen). If you lust after the extremely cold sensitive Licuala orbicularis, then this may be the hardier alternative for you. I have a new frond emerging on mine, I adore the sculptural aspects of this plant.

They say these are hardy enough to possibly push zone 9B Alice. Google a mature one they are just so very beautiful. They are considered medium small understory palms and 'only' get about 15 feet tall. Which I could handle in my space, but unless I live to be about 100-105 might never see. The problem has always been getting enough viable seeds as they require the male and female to get any seeds. And the natural habitat is teensy eensy. Their survival may depend on cultivation outside habitat by home and botanical garden growers

I googled it and it is very pretty. Don't think it would work here unfortunately.

No, hardiness is estimated at about 35F I think, same as listed for the Bottle Palm but both these palms survived the 20's in the Great Greenhouse Heater Flame Out a few years ago

Bottle palms are my favorite of all. We imported several from Indonesia where I worked in Memphis and they were moved inside the greenhouses for the winters. I think they eventually died. Sure wish I could grow them here.

I agree, Michael. I'd love to grow them here if it could be done. I have seen them in Florida and do love them.

I have 2 bottle palms. They are pretty slow growing also which makes them good greenhouse specimens. They are funny, they never ever have more than 3-4 fronds at a time. Mine are finally starting to 'bottle' after over 10 years

That is slow. Guess you need to be on the equator. The ones we got were maybe 6 foot tall with big bottles. I have no idea how old they were.

Its ok with me that they are slow, they won't outgrow the greenhouse like some palms I have had to remove (Dypsis pembana for one). My biggest Watermelon Palm is already pushing the limit and I have a Caryota that is on the ceiling

Our greenhouses were around 20 foot tall so there was a lot of space. They were never managed properly but they stayed warm. Mine is only 10 ft at the peak and crammed full or I would get one.
