Is it too late in the season to trim back hellebores? I live in zone 7a.

I just let them go through the winter, do the trimming back in the spring when the new growth appears.

I agree they should not be cut back till the new growth starts.

I just cut back the winter damage once the weather warms up. Some of my plants will keep blooming till mid-summer.

Nothing right now but plenty of rain. Most of the snow comes from late Jan. till mid March. We have had 1 storm of 12 inches and a few around an inch or 2, so not to bad so far.

I purchased three hellebores from the wedding party series that were in clearance at an outdoor plant shop back in January. Potted them up, put them in the sunniest spot on my roof garden this time of year, (which is to say very little sun, only 2-4 hours a day- I have to wait a month or so for the sun to shift and bypass the building that blocks most of it in the winter,) and have been watering and checking on them. Very little new leaf growth, and no flowers. They looked a bit raggedy and dried out when I purchased them- hence the deep discount. Is it possible they won't bloom this year at all from neglect at the plant center? Could I still find some hellebores in bloom at another plant shop this time of year? It's March 21st and I'm in Maryland, zone 7b-8a.

The buds come up with the new leaf growth so I would guess no flowers this year. And this would be the time of year to find them in flower at a garden center. Hope you find some.

Thanks, NJBob! Too bad, although I can't be really upset. They were on sale for $8/each, and the hellebores from the wedding series are often nearly $30/each.

I will have to go search for some other Hellebores at the local garden shop.

Has anybody tried growing the double, very dark purple-black "Dark and Handsome" hellebore? It looks gorgeous. I wonder if it grows as purple-black as in the ads, or if it is more gray in real life.

I was surprised to hear from everyone on Hellebores as my last post on them was in 2018. Anyway, here is my Hellebore garden for 2021. See attached.
