I'm not quite sure why they decided to grow thousands of old man cacti... this is in a greenhouse in Queretaro, Mexico. I guess they did it because they could. Smiling

This thing is rare here. Cultivated specimens dont bloom or make fruit(or so ive been told).
Most old men cacti here are espostoa, cleistocactus or oreocereus(like the miss-ided photos on this page)....
I wanted to order seeds....but the 2 vendors that had that ran out of those.....

The seeds are relatively big for cacti and actually pretty quick to get started in my experience. Maybe plants in pots are much slower to bloom than plants in the ground, I'm guessing....

Let's sort out those mistaken IDs then if you don't mind. Are you thinking of any picture in particular beyond this plant?



Do you agree that this plant should be filed under Oreocereus?

yep. a lot of the others are espostoa lanata and melanostelle i think....
someone on cactiguide described it as "unkempt beard of an old man", not silky
