Reading this - no wonder I like to grow many of my Orchids essentially mounted. The wet outdoor season of 2009 showed very clearly the detrimental effects of old bark mixes.

I had rot for two years when it rained non stop in summer. Now that I cover them with a tarp, the rot occurs only when I overwater! Mounting and aliflor work best for me!

Good article. Water! such a great difference in alliance requirements, making for an interesting learning experience.
