We arrived in Florida on Dec. 22 and much to my dismay, all of my nuns orchids were sporting black leaves due to having been exposed to freezing temperatures twice during the first part of December.

After consulting with Dan at E.F.G. Orchids, he told me that if the bulbs were still firm, they should be okay. I cut the leaves down to the green as he advised, and we brought them inside. I now see small shoots of green emerging --- there is still hope! We had debated when leaving FL the first of November if we should bring them into the house, however, felt that if we did that, they would perish from lack of water. It is my hope that next year around this time, I will be enjoying their beautiful blooms.

I've had similar spotting when I overwatered one year. Botrytis I think. But the next year they were fine. I hope you don't mind my moving your post into Orchid Care (the houseplants thread is for non orchids).

i think i get my spotting from high humidity here. Which leads to rot if things are kept to wet. Love your phaius orchids, i had a tank. but now only have a australis.

I've read that if there's a lot of circulation, that reduces botrytis.

Happy to report that in spite of the cold destroying their leaves, all of the phaius are now showing growth. I even have several spikes!

Great! My Phaius looks sad. I have decided to water it like a houseplant once a week and it wants more attention from me. Maybe I'll do that today. I took a snow day since there were only 2.5 hours of school.
