It seems my cat Milu had a nap on my keyboard while I went to the village. It goes mad and types hundreds of dots or lines - has it stopped? Seems so.

Della, I would say A. ligtu ssp. simsii grows mainly in open areas, under full sun. The ones in the picture did not bloom for years because of the drought. I suspect the ones in the open area (where I stood with the camera) died scorched by the sun and the erosion and these survived under the shelter of low trees and Ercilla spicata Ercilla spicata and better soil. Check the old pictures I posted at the PDB Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria ligtu subsp. simsii) The ones in this thread get morning sun, which is very benefitial to plants in my area, where the sun is really hot. They are at the west end of my place - the highest point in my place (not of the whole estate, there it gets much higher). When I went to the village today, I spotted A. angustifolia in bloom! Keep your fingers crossed neither the free roaming horses nor the cattle will eat them!

Rick, In Santiago I lived in an apartment, so I had the URGE to go out to nature. One of the few good things about living in the big city is that it is very close to 4 great ski centers. That's the area I visited in Summer (no shade anywhere!) to take pictures of Andean Alstroemerias, thanks to a basic Fuji digital camera a good friend from DG gave me (that was my first one!). Since I live here (almost 7 years), I have so much work to do (and pets) that I never went on picture safari again. I'll try to retake them, but to areas close to this place.

My friend Ricardo Martini, who took the best pictures I posted (first at DG and now here) is a Geologist and he literally combed the whole Atacama desert while he was active. He also allowed me to post some pictures he took in southern Chile (Villarrica and surroundings) where he visited his parents and spent his family holidays as well. He is a much better photographer than I. While I lived in Santiago, we made some photo-safaris together, but haven't seen each other since I live here.
