pot sunk in ground, NO ; and yes in zone 5, but although we've been listed as 5a, could be warmer winters. The planter is on my back patio, and it's no larger than a gallon size. I have overwintered them here in same location with the exception that they were more protected and sheltered than their current position; yet had less potting mix than currently with a bunch of sprouted seedling in one small bin container.
