I love Bill Maryott's intros, BUT ..... I always do a pedigree search before purchasing a cultivar. I have noted that quite a few of his have rust susceptible parents or grandparents in the genes. Sometimes it's on both sides of the parentage. So if you live in the "south", use the database here to go backwards to check out the pedigree genes before considering a cultivar. Even then a cultivar may or may not be rust susceptible. But I've often found that a rusty pedigree proves true for the children unless the cultivar has had breeding with highly rust resistant cultivars too, then you have a 50/50 chance of having a rust resistant child. For those of you up "north" who get freezing Winters, rust isn't a problem for you after the first year. Makes me wish I lived in the north ... sometimes. (But shoveling snow and long Winters would not suit me very well as a Florida Cracker with thin blood. )
