If you do an advanced search in the AHS database, with "spacecoast sea shells" as a parent, you will see many cultivars with an applique. That trait must be very strong in that cultilvar's genetics.

I am getting one this spring from another member of the club I belong to ..... "God's Mercy", Marlatt - J 2014, which is (Ultraviolet Mood × Spacecoast Sea Shells) I love that the bloom is very round and the color around the applique is darker like the edge on the petals and sepals. (another big plus for me is that it's 45" tall)
