Happy 2016 Cheryl !
We have a LOT of shade in our yard. As a result, I've standardized on hosta, hellebores and fern for a lot of our plant landscaping. For shrubs, we use azalea, rhododendron and keria japonica.
Depending on the deer, I may have some of the following in the spring:
- hosta lancifolia
- keria japonica
- lady fern (athyrium filix-femina)
- wild ginger (asarum canadensis) [not edible)
They are all doing well in the shade.
We're located in zone 7, but I've seen hosta documentation on some varieties that are hardy to zone 4.
I'm attaching some pics of the lancifolia, keria and lady fern.
