Terri - give clematis another try in a spot with six hours of sun. Plant them deeply (3" is good) with a mix of bone meal, compost, and manure. They don't want to be soaking wet but they shouldn't dry out either. Place a piece of slate, or lots of additional mulch, in front of it to keep the soil moist.
