We're surrounded by tall 100 year old redwoods - huge ones. When it rains hard
or the wind blows, I get a little concerned - but the old-timers here in the valley
say that the wide root systems of these trees provide a lot of stability. I'm counting on that.
I do love them, and one could easily take out my house!

Researchers just finished a survey of trees all over California -- looking at watershed concerns and that sort of thing. They found something like 60 million trees were dying or close to dying because of the drought. But the redwoods, interestingly enough, were by and large okay. Part of that is location. Redwoods don't tend to grow on mountain ridges, which is where trees hurt most for lack of water, but even so they seem to be in good shape. They don't have the deep roots some trees have, but they have a wide, wide root base.
