I started my hybridizing career with three $10 seedlings that I purchased from Howard Hite, and a half dozen seedlings purchased from Al Goldner for $6 each. A few years later, I added several Curt Hanson seedlings (free). So no.....you don't have to be rich!!!! But it helps to have a goal that makes your daylilies different than any others that are currently on the market.
