To prevent slugs, I do not mulch anywhere near the hostas, and early in Spring, I remove all dead leaves. This assures that slugs do not have a place to live. I water every day, but the slugs to not survive since they do not have a place to live.
To prevent weeds, I use Preem and pull weeds.
