Come Join us for HOSTAS IN THE MOUNTAINS
The Dixie Regional Hosta Society Annual Convention
July 15-18, 2010
As summer’s heat reaches it’s crescendo, get away to the coolness of the North Carolina
Mountains for the Dixie Regional. We have a special huge blue hosta, ‘Blue Ridge’ as a gift,
great speakers, gardens to tour and of course lots of hostas. The best part is getting to talk hostas
with old friends, new acquaintances, and hosta experts. Remember to bring a sweater, we are not
joking about the cool evenings in Waynesville.
The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains will make a wonderful backdrop for our annual
weekend of hosta fun. Waynesville is located in western North Carolina, about 30 miles from
Asheville. The North Carolina Hosta Society will be our host for an expanded 4-day event, which
will include a lecture and tour through the Tissue Culture Lab at nearby Haywood Community
College on Friday morning, nationally-recognized guest speakers, including Don Dean and Peter
Loewer on Saturday morning, garden tours Friday and Saturday and of course our Fabulous
Friday Night Auction. Plant Sales with vendors from across the Southeast at Rux Gardens will be
open to the public both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Saturday evening we will return to the
Inn for a banquet with Bob Solberg giving the after dinner talk.
The festivities start on Thursday evening, July 15th with hospitality at the Waynesville
Inn Penthouse. The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa (formerly the Waynesville Country
Club), which features a 4-star, 27-hole golf course for those non-hosta loving spouses has been
recently renovated. It takes you back to a time when life moved a lot slower but with all the
modern conveniences.
We have planned two very special treats in addition to this full schedule of events. First,
we have organized an optional group tour of the world famous Biltmore House and Gardens in
Asheville on Sunday, July 18th. We will tour the house and gardens as well as all the other
venues and the best part is that tickets are discounted 33%. The optional tour admission price is
just $40 instead of the usual $60, just sign up on the registration form. Last, and hopefully not
least, we will have the first, to our knowledge, Slug and Snail Garden Art Contest on Friday at
the auction. Awards will be given out at the banquet on Saturday. So bring your favorite piece of
mollusk memorabilia and join in the fun. Complete rules will be provided with your registration
confirmation.
The area also features many other attractions, including the craft shops of downtown
Waynesville, the night life of Asheville, the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harraha’s Casino,
and wildlife adventures galore. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also celebrating its 75th Anniversary
and there may be festivities associated with that, as well. See it all at ExploreAsheville.com . Plan
to spend all week.
If you need more information or have any questions, please contact either Trish
Rux at [email protected] 828-456-4621, or Bob Solberg,
[email protected] 919-309-0649.
Hope to see you there!!!
