I had adobe soil in Piedmont, Lyn, and quickly learned not to do any digging during the rainy season. Digging in oversaturated clay soil ruins the structure of the soil. In my present garden I don't hit clay unless I dig down 5 or 6 feet, so I can dig holes for plants at any time of the year.
