I love Rhododendrons for shade. All year long their deep green foliage is beautiful, and in May (in my zone 6b garden), their trusses burst into dramatic color: red, pink, magenta, purple, and white.

I live on a windy hilltop, so my rhododendrons need to be tough. The cultivars 'Scintillation' and 'Helsinki University" shown in the last photo below are two of my most dependable cultivars. The one in the first photo is very dependable too, but I'm not sure what cultivar it is (possibly 'Roseum Elegans').
