Let me put it this way, seeking not blame but responsibility. Say that they felt like they had to go along with the changes to keep their jobs. Okay. Then when they put their own interests ahead of the members, and took steps to silence criticism, they let everyone know where their priorities will be in the future, and what you can expect them to do next time something like this comes up. (Based on past experience, it will.)

I believe Baja is right, and this points up the flaw in your analogy, Carrie. Your first sentence suggests that Terry and Melody were acting on mercenary motives because they wanted to keep their jobs, but you compare them to a mother calming her child because she has her child's "best interests at heart." I don't think Terry and Melody ever had the DG subscribers' best interests at heart.
