Mark and Lucky, cutting the rot away is nothing more than what I do when taking cuttings of a healthy plant. Either way, you'll be left with a stub. Where the cuttings are taken will not only heal but more often than not, branch. Of course the difference is that I would never take cuttings in the winter months. But when rot is found, well, the cutting back must be done.
