I have had great success with simply washing the berries and broadcasting the seeds. Supposedly the fruit surrounding the seeds inhibits germination. The first ones I planted were from seed I harvested from a wild area next to my property. I also purchased a neglected plant at a local nursery. It only gets to be about 15" tall and has beautiful solid purple dorsal flowers. It is in it's third year now and looking great.
