I was wondering about hydroponics myself.
If I am having trouble with clumps I often dig them up and replant elsewhere. Last December I didn't have the time to replant so I just sat the fans in water till I could. The fans took off like rockets with new large leaves. Since then I have been purposely leaving poor performing fans in water. The results are excellent. It is a shame to have to plant them again.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.
