No, not a disaster, just learning the hard way like we all do. I'd be surprised if anyone here has never killed a plant or had one commit herbicide 😄
Best way with seeds is to dampen the medium, sow the seeds, cover with clear plastic depending on the container size and then you shouldn't need to water until the first one comes up and you take the cover off. Then comes the hard part, which is knowing when to water. Over-watering is far more common than under-watering and watering appropropriately is about the hardest thing to master in gardening.
