I am told that hummingbirds can be year-round in my area (Pacific Northwest) but don't find it to hold true for me. My normal range is March-September or thereabouts. I splurged on a new feeder this year and filled it last week. Today I've seen a couple (or perhaps the same one) visiting it, which is early for me. My previous feeder had an soft green glass container, and this one is bright red glass (and larger). I am hoping the big red globe will catch the eye of little guys a bit better than the green one. Strangely, my neighbor around the corner (perhaps 2 miles away) has better success with year-round hummers. Perhaps he has a more protected feeding area than I do. Or maybe I take my feeders down too early - it just seems that by late August I get very few actual hummers and I worry that the hot temps make the solution go skunky.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.
