If you previously planted hardneck, Deb, these plants were probably germinated from the seed-heads. I am assuming you had no bunching onions/chives that could have done the same thing. I have never planted the seeds from my hardneck since it takes two years to get a reasonable size bulb from those germinated seeds. You could separate them and see what they do over the summer/winter months. If you do this, you'll have to let us know what the outcome is. I am sorry I can't tell you more.
