Here in rural Pennsylvania USA, we have a problem with white-tailed deer and groundhogs. I've found that interplanting daffodils (poisonous) with EVERYTHING really helps. The deer sniff the daffies and move on, leaving my grape hyacinths and hosta alone!
I am not "country" I am "landed gentry."
