I have never heard of doing this, so don't have a clue. I have only been growing seedling for approximately 3 years and like you, I just allow mine to branch on their own. I do know that cutting established plants encourages branching. I just never thought to do it with tiny seedlings. I hope others that are more experienced than I will chime in.
