Howdy!
I'm in northwestern AZ and will try my luck with tomatoes this year. I have an order on its way consisting of Tomato Delicious (indeterminate), Jelly Bean Hybrid (indeterminate), and Roma (determinate).
I tried some in our main bed last year, but a family emergency took us away for a week and they were infested with tomato worms by the time we returned. Needless to say, we lost the majority and I swore to never plant tomatoes in my main bed again as they had their way with my pepper and tomatillo plants as well.
Anyway, we have an empty 3000 gallon pool placed below ground. We initially thought we'd do some aquaponics, but that idea quickly fell to the wayside for many reasons. My plan was to utilize this space for my tomatoes and hot peppers (Anaheim & jalapeño) this year, but using the container method as opposed to filling it with soil. The summer heat is about 102-105 for many weeks. I'm wondering if this would be a good area for tomatoes. Because it is below ground level, winds will be kept to a minimum and I expect it will create a "hot house" effect. Does this sound like conditions that tomatoes will like?
