I planted my cutting before in a cacti mix, with lots of pumice, akadama, kanuma, some lava rock, and added in some compost. I really made it as gritty as I can make it. The thing is, it is the timing when I do it that I have to consider. If it is a new cutting I wait till late April to mid-May to start it, and put the container in part shade, by then daytime temps will be consistent reaching 70F and higher, and evening temps not going lower than 50F. . Any earlier putting it out I risk rotting it. Starting it indoors, it will just wait till temps are right.
My greatest hindrance here is low humidity, so it will take its sweet time to root and awaken. So as I wait for it to root, got to make sure it is feeling consistently warm but not in direct sun and baking heat, so positioning it in part shade while it attempts to root outdoors in a container.
